I am Hyunah Khoo, a researcher in Chinese historical phonology. My research focuses on Chinese rhyme books (yunshu), rhyme tables (yuntu), and character dictionaries compiled in China during the early modern and modern periods, as well as Chinese-language textbooks and dictionaries created by Korean, Japanese, and Western authors. I study the phonological features found in these materials from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives, and I have also been building databases that allow users to search the phonological information contained in them. Beyond this, I am interested in how East Asia was perceived in East Asian studies materials compiled by Westerners—such as travelogues, newspapers, and magazines—and how these perceptions are reflected in their work.
